From Pages to People: The 10-Year Journey of Harborne Book Club

It all started in 2015, when a small group of people from Harborne realised they shared a common passion for books. They would casually swap reading recommendations over coffee, and soon the idea of forming a book club was born. What began as an informal gathering has since grown into a thriving community of book lovers, with members from all walks of life coming together to share in the joy of reading.

Our early meetings were intimate, with just a few people, discussing a mix of contemporary fiction and classics. Back then, we had no set structure, just a love for reading and a desire to talk about the books that moved us. As word spread, the club began to attract more members, each bringing their own unique perspectives and reading tastes. Our discussions evolved, becoming richer and more diverse with each new voice.

Over the years, we’ve broadened our reading list to include everything from modern bestsellers to literary classics, as well as thought-provoking non-fiction. Our meetings have also expanded from casual chats to more structured discussions, with members preparing thoughtful insights and reflections on each book. We’ve even ventured into hosting themed meetings, such as historical fiction nights or discussions centered around specific authors. We’ve had many locations over the years. From the White Swan (or Dirty Duck!), the old Boohoo Cafe which is now Tropea and more recently Slug and Lettuce on the High St.

In recent years, the digital age has also brought new opportunities for our club. During the pandemic, we shifted to online meetings, allowing us to keep the conversation going even when we couldn’t meet in person. This change brought new challenges and so we took a break for a time to regroup.

Today, we’re more than just a local book club: we’re a community that spans different backgrounds, ages, and perspectives, united by a love for books. We’ve also begun working with authors, providing a platform for new voices and reviewing fresh releases. As we reflect on our 10-year journey, it’s amazing to see how far we’ve come, from a small circle of friends to a larger, vibrant community.

As we look to the future, we’re excited to see where the next decade will take us. Whether it’s expanding our reading list, hosting guest authors, or continuing to welcome new members, the heart of Harborne Book Club remains the same: a love for stories and the connections they inspire.

Here’s to the next chapter!
